Serial ATA
Still no real post in this blog, so lets write something with insight :-)
I really would like to get SATA support for BeOS one day. I send multiple mails to Silicon Image, as I own a Silicon Image Si3112A chipset based SATA controller. It works well with Windows, but is completely ignored by BeOS.
Silicon Image doesn't answer my emails, so I asked Yellowtab if they could try to negotiate something. However, Yellowtab didn't get any response either.
I didn't do much further research, the Linux drivers seem to be pretty complicated, and I don't think it's easy to do a driver without documentation.
I'm also still using BeOS R5 and Zeta, both use the standard IDE driver that doesn't support 48 bit addressing, and both SATA harddisks that I have do need it. I'm reluctant to install Thomas Kurschel's new IDE driver as it's probably not completely stable yet, but Yellowtab is busy integrating 48 bit support in Zeta, so I guess I just have to wait until they release a working version that has the new driver architecture integrated.
I'll probably get a SATA card from another vendor once Zeta has 48 bit support. Silicon Image doesn't want support, and Zeta is not ready for it.
